How a measurement works with us

Five steps from the enquiry to the re-measurement. Consulting is built in – before the measurement, during the measurement and when evaluating the results.

  1. Enquiry and a short requirements check

You describe the product, its development stage and your question. We clarify what should be measured, which information is still missing and which site fits.

    • Type of product, area of use and target market
    • Known anomalies and measurements done so far
    • Dimensions, power supply and the peripherals needed
  2. Technical preparation and measurement plan

We define the test scope and record how the device is set up and operated. You receive a list of what to bring.

Preparing your device for an EMC measurement
    • Measurement plan with test scope and operating states
    • Checklist for device, peripherals and documentation
    • Proposed date and time required
  3. Measurement in the right test centre

We measure in whichever test environment fits the method and the device – the fully anechoic chamber in Harbke or the shielded chamber in Meine. You are welcome to attend.

Compare the equipment of both test centres
    • Setup, cabling and operating states are documented
    • Measurement with variation of position and operating state
    • A first assessment during the measurement itself
  4. Joint evaluation and measures

We go through the measured values with you, place them against the relevant limits and, where something stands out, name the probable cause.

    Root cause analysis and optimisation
    • Measurement data with limit comparison and documentation
    • Root cause analysis where anomalies appear
    • Prioritised measures for layout, cabling, shielding or enclosure
  5. Re-measurement or the next development step

After implementation we measure again under identical conditions. If no measure is needed, we record the status and you move on with values you can rely on.

    • Verification measurement under identical conditions
    • Comparison before and after the change
    • Preparation for a later external test, if planned

Which measurement or which kind of support fits your project is set out in our overview of EMC services. Further checklists and fundamentals are collected in the EMC knowledge area.

Frequently asked questions about the process

Can I attend the measurement?
Yes. You are welcome to be present and to discuss questions directly with the engineers doing the measuring. That is particularly useful when changes to the setup are to be tried out.
How long does a measurement take?
That depends on the test scope, the number of operating states and the complexity of the setup. We estimate the time needed together with you when the measurement plan is drawn up.
What do I need to bring?
The device in working condition, the peripherals it needs such as power supplies, cables and sensors, a short functional description, and any documents you have such as a block diagram or the layout. You receive the exact list with the measurement plan.
Is consulting included in the process?
Consulting is part of the work and not a separate add-on: clarifying requirements beforehand, an assessment during the measurement and putting the results into context afterwards. Larger consulting work such as a layout review is agreed separately.
Can the results be used for a conformity assessment?
Our measurements are pre-compliance measurements and not accredited tests. They show the EMC status of your device under the documented conditions and prepare a later test. Whether and in what form an external test is required depends on the product, the standard and your customers' requirements, and should be clarified case by case.
Can you measure on short notice?
Short-notice appointments are possible depending on our workload. Tell us your timeframe in the enquiry and we will come back with a concrete proposal.
