EMC consulting for development teams
For us, consulting is the technical complement to measuring: we clarify the requirements up front, define the measurement strategy with you and then put the results into technical context.
- Service
- Clarify requirements, plan measurement strategy and setup
- Location
- at your site, remote or in the test centre
- Basis
- Schematic, layout, setup, measurement data
- Result
- Measurement plan and prioritised recommendations
What the consulting covers
Each building block states what you concretely end up with – so you can judge what you are commissioning.
Clarifying requirements
We work out with you what is relevant for your product and your target market: type of product, environment, operating states and the EMC requirements that follow from them.
Result
An overview of the relevant requirements and of the open points that need clarifying before a measurement.
Measurement strategy and test plan
We define what gets measured in which order, which operating states are covered and which measurements can sensibly be bundled.
Result
A measurement plan with test scope, operating states, required peripherals and an estimate of the time needed.
Layout and setup review
We go through schematic, layout, cabling and mechanical setup together and point out the places that typically become critical in EMC terms.
Result
Annotated notes on grounding, filtering, cable routing, shield bonding and openings in the enclosure.
Root cause analysis
When measured values stand out, we narrow down the source – with near-field investigations, targeted variations of the setup and comparative measurements.
Result
The probable cause named with measured evidence instead of a guess.
Optimisation measures
From the analysis we derive measures, estimate effort and expected effect and prioritise them together with your team.
Result
A prioritised list of measures, implementable in layout, cabling, filtering, shielding or enclosure.
When consulting pays off
Three points in a project where consulting is worth the most.
Before the first measurement
So that the measurement answers your project's questions and the device is ready in the right operating state with the right peripherals.
After an anomaly
When a measurement shows exceeded limits, or the device reacts to disturbances, and the cause is not yet clear.
Before external testing
When a test at an accredited body is coming up and it should be clear beforehand which limits become critical and how the setup has to look.
Please note: our consulting is technical support during development. It does not replace legal advice, nor testing by an accredited body. For measurements as part of the consulting, the capabilities of our two test centres apply – see test centres.
Basis
What we look at together
Depending on the development stage, we work through as much of this as the pending decision requires.
- Type of product and target market
- Relevant requirements and standard families
- Measurement strategy and a sensible order of measurements
- Operating states that should be covered
- Schematic
- PCB layout
- Grounding and return current concept
- Cabling and cable routing
- Filtering
- Shield bonding
- Openings in the enclosure
- Existing results from earlier measurements
Result
What you receive
Not an expert opinion, but a working basis your team can carry on with.
- An overview of the requirements relevant for your product
- A list of the open technical points
- An agreed measurement plan
- Notes on critical places in the setup
- Prioritised recommendations for action
- A decision on which next measurement step makes sense
